Cartagena de Indias in Colombia is a city that has historically been strategic. In fact, due to its port location, it was founded in the 16th century (1533) as a walled city as it was preyed upon by corsairs who looted and searched for treasures in the area.

Bolívar considered it after Caracas as his second city. In the square in his name you can read: “If Caracas gave me life, Cartagena gave me glory.” And on November 11, 1811, Cartagena was the first Colombian territory to declare itself independent in the midst of the independence process. It is the most touristic city due to its attractions such as the historic center, the San Felipe Fort, La Popa Hill, the Gold Museum, the Gabriel García Márquez Tomb in the La Merced Cloister, the beaches of its Boca Grande bay, among others, and in turn, it is the city that currently has the most important oil development projects.

Then; It is not surprising that for the fourth consecutive year an event that brings together the most important Oil & Gas and Oil Maritime Operators consortiums and businessmen is repeated, I am referring to the XVIII Conference of SLOM (Latin American Society of Maritime Operators Oil Tankers and Monobuoys).

A little history

The first day was held in Venezuela. It was in 2005. Subsequently and uninterruptedly, workshops were held in Ecuador, Brazil, Mexico, Uruguay, Panama, Peru and Colombia. Even in 2020 it was done – for reasons of the global pandemic – virtually. The main objective of the event is to make oil seaports safer, more efficient, cleaner and more competitive. The stage has served over the years to form a community of countries and companies with a membership that grows every day and in which they can exchange experiences and learn about technological innovations and recommended procedures for the use and application of improvements in services and facilities. .

Each Conference is the consolidation of this society that promotes knowledge, implementation of best practices and the expansion of strategic alliances with organizations and maritime authorities in the sector. Currently, SLOM is a must and a perfect setting to strengthen institutional and business links.

Reunion

The XVII Conference was very special. It was the reunion. This is how it was called adding to this motto “Integrated we can do more”. It had to be this way, because the year 2020 did not allow this entire SLOM community to meet to develop what they do year after year: organize activities for technical exchange and the promotion of safe operations. A significant number of presentations and forums were given in that capacity of the Luis Carlos Sarmiento Angulo Convention Center with success.

The opening ceremony was attended by distinguished personalities, including André Le Goubin, Senior Vice President of the Nautical Institute; Danielle Dcalise, General Manager of Maritime Terminals; Alberto Consuegra, Executive Vice President of Ecopetrol; Renata Capanario (Border Chamber of Commerce: Arturo Natho, General Manager of Copec, Chile; Gonzalo Mera Truffini, Manager of YPF; Pablo Luna, Manager of Petroecuador; Enrique Sandoval, Vice President of Technical Services of Hocol; Irene Alfaro, Director of Downstream from Arpel, Uruguay, and Ricardo Izquierdo, President of SLOM.

Together with them at that inaugural gala, there was a right to speak to make the official presentation of INSPENET. The engineer Francesco Solari, CEO of INSPENET, made the presentation of this organization, informing the attendees about the scope and object of this project that began its operations in that event, capturing the attention of those who are responsible for some Latin American companies and organizations American companies that have their representation in the world, as is the case of the AMPP.

Likewise, Solari invited them to participate in the network of knowledge and professional connection, contributing their opinions or accessing the rigorous interviews that were held during those three days, where they could also enjoy the camaraderie and respect for each one.

Inspenet Tv made live transmissions via streaming to the personalities and representatives of this reunion and it was the added value to the day with the favorable comments that they meant for the projection of the XVIII SLOM day.

Again SLOM in Cartagena

The XVIII Conference, as already mentioned, returns to Cartagena on October 5, 6 and 7. This time the enthusiasm is greater. The cap. Ricardo Izquierdo, president of SLOM, has stated that there are 38 conferences and 3 workshops within the academic agenda, and many of the investment companies that did not accompany them last year for fear of the lag of sanitary restrictions, this year turned to Cartagena , reserving and registering to attend and participate in the conference.

On the other hand, the interest of the four largest companies in the Oil & Gas business in Colombia such as Ecopetrol, Ocensa, Luck and Astec, requesting to host this event, guarantees an unprecedented success for this meeting where once again, The progress and development of this sector will be highlighted for the benefit of the economy, and the recognition of SLOM as a source of support for the oil maritime community and for all Latin American maritime and port authorities.
