Engineers from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of the Republic, in Uruguay, led by the associate professor of the Institute of Fluid Mechanics and Environmental Engineering (IMFIA) developed a system to predict sea level three days in advance.

It is the “first product” of the so-called operational system of the Río de la Plata and the Uruguayan coast: a model that “allows us to predict what is going to happen on our coasts” and make decisions in various fields of economic and social relevance: from clearing obstruction, cleaning and repair of collectors, to possible evacuations of coastal towns due to flooding, entry and exit of barges from inland ports, to search and rescue tasks in the event of an accident at sea.

This system, which will soon add the wave forecast and indicators such as temperature and salinity, among others, aims to be the most accurate tool possible so that the country is not blind to the sea.

“Like all countries with coastal areas, it is essential for Uruguay to have a forecast system for metocean conditions in territorial waters. Although it is of interest to several institutions, its development has not yet been established and that is why since the research has been working on a first prototype, which in the future can be transferred to the corresponding management bodies”, said Fossati.

The predictive model is fed by real-time measurements from different tide gauges (device that measures the vertical movements of the sea) both Uruguayan (for example, from the National Ports Administration and the Oceanography, Hydrography and Meteorology Service of the Navy, among others). other organizations) such as Argentines. “There is a lot more information available that we need to include,” he said.

The operational system of the Río de la Plata and the Uruguayan coast that will be presented this Friday at the ‘Ingeniería de Sample’ event has just completed the first phase of the project. Starting next year and with new financing, the model will become more complete.
