The International Day of Women in Engineering was created by the Women’s Engineering Society (WES) in the United Kingdom (year 2014), on the occasion of the celebration of its 95th anniversary. Due to the boom that this date has taken, UNESCO in 2016 distinguished 50 female engineers around the world who excelled in their profession. Likewise, this day acquired an international character from the year 2017 when UNESCO decided to declare June 23 as the International Day of Women in Engineering.
And to celebrate it, we interviewed our Inspenet engineers about the reasons that led them to study that career.
The following interview is with the engineers: Yolanda Reyes, Mayuly Rodríguez and Anais Suárez, to learn about the personal and professional motivations that led them to become engineers and what aspects of their work they enjoy the most.
It is worth highlighting the role that each one of them plays in Inspenet and how their substantial contributions have contributed to generating value in the object of the Inspenet project as a global network of knowledge and professional connection.
Yolanda Reyes: my biggest challenge has been to promote equal opportunities in the scientific and technological field
We started with Dr. Yolanda Reyes, a Chemical Engineer graduated from the University of Zulia (LUZ, Venezuela), with more than 30 years of experience and extensive knowledge in: Electrochemistry, Corrosion and Chemical Technology at an Academic and Industrial level. He completed fourth level studies obtaining a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering Sciences with a specialty in Corrosion at the Universidad Del Zulia (LUZ, Venezuela), Doctorate in Fundamental and Applied Electrochemistry at the Universidad de los Andes (ULA, Venezuela), and studies of Post. Doctorate in Polymeric and Metallic Coatings for Corrosion control at the University of Zulia (LUZ, Venezuela) to summarize what her resume is, which must also include her tenure as a professor at the Francisco de Miranda Experimental University and in currently as leader of the content section in the company INSPENET. LLC.
Why did you decide to study this career?
I always knew that I wanted to dedicate myself to something to help humanity. At first I thought about the field of medicine, but during my school years I discovered my passion for learning Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics, that’s why I decided on Chemical Engineering!
What do you like most about your profession?
I initially entered the oil industry as a corrosion and chemical process engineer. Then I had the opportunity to work as an academic staff at the university as a teacher and researcher; which allowed me to develop in science and technology in the field of research oriented in the area of Corrosion and Electrochemistry specifically in the synthesis of corrosion inhibitors and implementation of coating systems from conductive polymers, and thus I was able to discover my passion for teaching and research in science and technology.

One of his greatest challenges as a Chemical Engineer was mainly focused on teaching and research, which is why he also states “that my greatest challenge was to promote equal opportunities in the scientific and technological field, for the acquisition of new technologies in the innovation of the knowledge to impart.
Mayuly Rodríguez: sometimes the stigma prevailed around the presence of women in the engineering area
Our second interviewee is Mayuly Rodríguez, Mechanical Engineer graduated from the Francisco de Miranda National Experimental University (UNEFM, Venezuela), with more than 15 years of experience in the oil & gas industry, in the areas of Inspection of Static Equipment, Non-Destructive Testing and Plant stoppages and works in service. She currently works as a technical content generator at the INSPENET company. LLC.
Why did you decide to study engineering?
It was a purely personal decision, from my studies prior to university, the Mechanical Engineering career always caught my attention, with the benefit that it was given at the closest university that I had in the community where I lived and knowing that it was a very interesting career. valued, with a good professional profile, with multiple job opportunities.
And what do you like most about being an engineer?
What I do right now. Developing and growing the technical part of the oil & gas industrial sector, based on the area of static equipment inspection. Currently, I find myself with a new opportunity, doing more theoretical and analytical tasks, in the content section of the INSPENET portal where information is continuously generated to share with a network of professionals linked to the inspection and engineering area around the world.
And as for the challenges?
In reality, more than challenges at certain times I felt barriers, because sometimes the stigma prevailed around the presence of women in the area of engineering, because a career in the field was characterized by strong activities that could be a limit for women. , but in general, each situation that arose was overcome.
Anaís Suárez: leadership and management with the ability to solve problems
Finally, we have Anaís Suárez, Mechanical Engineer, graduated in 2005 from the Francisco de Miranda Experimental University, and later, in 2013, she began studies at the same university for a Master’s Degree in Engineering Project Management until 2016 and with a diploma in Management Program in Quality Management Systems: ISO 9001:2015. He currently works as a Marketing leader at the company Inspenet llc, planning and seeking solutions through leadership management that convinces everyone that things can be better than they are, and above all showing a way to make it possible.
Studying engineering caught your attention, why?
Because I have always liked numbers, also in the area where I live there is one of the largest refineries in the world and we engineers play a very important role within the industry and specifically mechanical engineering is very extensive within the labor field allowing us to apply the technology to the design of various objects working on themselves, on the functioning of each one.
In what area of engineering have you developed your professional career?
In the areas of inspection, heat treatment, reliability, mechanical integrity and innovations.
What are the most relevant challenges for a woman in the field of engineering?
Being a humanist mainly in leadership and management with the ability to solve problems. Being an integral engineer, capable of adding value and making contributions to the organization. Have adaptability to change and work as a team in an interdisciplinary manner, only in this way will you also have the ability to identify the conditions of the environment proactively and the ability to innovate permanently with a view to the future, seeking a balance between economic development, care for the environment environment and people.
To finish, a question for all: what is the message to women on this International Day of Women in Engineering?
Yolanda: That they dedicate themselves without complexes to developing their professional career as far as they decide. I think they already do and there are more and more women who overcome all the obstacles that society imposes. And for current and future professionals I want to share the following message: “If your mind can imagine it and your heart can believe it, then you can do it”!
Mayuly: That knowledge is universal, that they perform in the area where they feel best and can contribute their knowledge for a better development and evolution at a global level. That the role of women engineers has led to many barriers and is increasingly entrenched in large global organizations, where female talent has made multiple contributions in all areas of engineering.
Anaís: That they enjoy their profession, we are capable of doing difficult things and trying new things, it simply indicates moving forward.
Historically, in engineering, women have left a very marked mark, they have proven to be brilliant and capable of facing adversity. Thanks to these successful women dedicated to their careers, equity is becoming an ever closer goal, although the road is long. Here we have a clear example of that dedication.
