Green Hydrogen International (GHI) will install “Hydrogen City”, in South Texas, USA, a 60 GW green hydrogen production and storage center that aspires to be the largest of its kind in the world.
The company aims to be able to supply airplanes and rockets with H₂ obtained exclusively through wind and solar energy. To this end, Hydrogen City announced that it will produce more than 2,500 tons of green hydrogen per year, which is equivalent to approximately 3.5% of the current global production of gray hydrogen.
The GHI company announced that this project focuses on a hydrogen storage facility in the Piedras Pintas salt dome located in Duval County. The pipelines will deliver the green hydrogen to Corpus Christi and Brownsville, where it will be converted into green ammonia, sustainable aviation fuel and other products, or delivered by pipeline directly to hydrogen power plants and other users throughout the state.
According to its website, GHI has seven projects under development with a combined output of one terawatt (1 TW). Hydrogen City will be the biggest and the first to start. The first phase will be operational in 2026, providing 2 GW of green energy production and will have two storage caverns for hydrogen.
GHI states that, in future phases, “more than 50 caverns can be created on the site, which will store up to 6 TWh of energy.” These caverns are a vital part of the development, as they act as a buffer for intermittent energy production.
GHI also plans to build pipelines to deliver hydrogen directly to other customers, and is exploring export options to Japan and Korea, as well as the feasibility of sustainable green rocket fuel.
