At the site of a former coal-fired power plant, RWE is deploying three new battery centers that will allow electricity storage with a total installed capacity of 600 megawatts. The company will install more than 25,000 lithium-iron battery units distributed in 316 containers, capable of delivering energy for two continuous hours, achieving 1.2 gigawatt hours of storage.

A battery center with digital flexibility

The conversion of the former site in Hamm makes this facility the most important battery storage hub in the country . This development introduces technology capable of providing balancing power in milliseconds, thanks to the use of ultra-fast inverters and advanced control systems.

With planned commissioning between 2026 and 2028, the entire system in Hamm will reach a total capacity of 1.35 GWh, including existing installations. This will allow for the simultaneous charging of more than 23,000 electric vehicles . Beyond storage, these batteries are designed to provide auxiliary services such as electrical inertia, which is crucial in an energy environment with high renewable penetration.

An investment that strengthens decarbonization

RWE will allocate a triple-digit million euro sum to this megaproject , which is part of its international growth strategy in storage. The company already operates more than 1,200 MW of distributed battery systems across Europe, the United States, and Australia.

The Westphalian location is no coincidence. By integrating with projects like the AMPRION converter , RWE’s infrastructure is poised to become an essential node for the European grid, enabling efficient management of surpluses and strengthening supply stability for consumers and industries.
