Description

Founded in 1999 by researchers from Imperial College London, Guided Ultrasonics Ltd. (GUL) is the global authority in guided wave technology for the inspection and monitoring of pipelines and pipework.

GUL pioneered Guided Wave Testing (GWT) and continues to play a defining role in the development of international standards that underpin large-area pipeline inspection today. For over 25 years, the company has remained 100% focused on guided wave technology, supporting asset owners and inspection service providers worldwide.

Core Products & Services

  1. Wavemaker® Pipeline Screening System: Guided wave systems for large-area inspection of in-service pipelines, identifying corrosion and other cross-sectional changes over long lengths of pipe from a single test location. The latest generation instrument, Wavemaker® G5, together with WaveProV™, improves deployment efficiency and streamlines inspection procedures. The instrument features touchscreen operation and hot-swappable batteries, while maintaining compatibility with existing transducer ring types. When used with Compact® Rings, data collection is further simplified across a wide range of applications.
  2. QSR® Scanning System: Guided wave scanning system for localised assessment where direct wall thickness measurement is not possible. QSR® provides quantitative information related to remaining wall thickness at features such as pipe supports, clamps, interfaces, and embedded sections. The variants QSR1® and QSR® Axial support different geometries and access constraints.
  3. gPIMS®: guided wave Permanently Installed Monitoring System, provides continuous, non-intrusive monitoring of pipelines. It is designed for assets where repeated access is difficult or costly, including buried, insulated, subsea, and high-temperature lines. gPIMS® components (sensors and control units) are available in standard and hazardous-area (Ex) variants.
  4. Monitoring Studio: Cloud-based platform used to review, manage, and trend data generated by gPIMS® installations. It supports long-term condition assessment and integration into asset integrity management frameworks.
  5. GUL Training (GULT): Certified guided wave training programmes delivered by experienced practitioners. Courses range from appreciation sessions through to multi-level guided wave certification, supporting the development of competent operators worldwide.

Applications

GUL technology is applied to a wide range of pipeline integrity challenges including:

  • Screening long sections of insulated pipeline to locate corrosion with minimal insulation removal
  • Screening long sections of pipeline on racks where access is limited and scaffolding is impractical
  • Assessing buried pipelines where excavation is restricted or costly
  • Inspecting road crossings from accessible lateral locations
  • Screening subsea pipelines from accessible topside locations
  • Identifying corrosion at pipe supports prior to targeted follow-up inspection
  • Quantifying remaining wall thickness at supports, clamps, and interfaces using QSR®
  • Monitoring corrosion development under insulation over time
  • Monitoring buried pipelines where repeat access is not feasible
  • Monitoring high-consequence pipeline sections to track deterioration in real time
