RWE commissions its first solar plant in Sicily and expands access to renewable energy

RWE has opened its first solar plant in Italy, using bifacial modules to supply clean energy to 7,000 homes in Sicily.
RWE lanza su primera planta solar en Italia

RWE has inaugurated its first solar photovoltaic plant in Italy . Located in Partinico in the Sicily region, the Bosco photovoltaic plant has a capacity of 8.3 megawatts (MWac) and is equipped with 15,000 bifacial modules. This installation will provide green electricity to approximately 7,000 households, making an important contribution to the national electricity grid.

Resource optimization with solar plant

The Bosco solar plant is a breakthrough in terms of technology and operational efficiency. RWE has implemented an accelerated permitting process in Italy, allowing for “Ready to Build” certification in less than 18 months . The construction of the plant, which was completed in just 10 months, has been key to optimising the use of available land and resources.

To maximise its impact, the plant is connected to RWE’s nearby substation in Partinico, which also receives electricity from the company’s wind farms in the region. This integrated approach allows the wind and solar energy systems to complement each other, naturally balancing the production patterns of both sources.

Commitment to biodiversity and sustainability

A highlight of the Bosco solar plant is its design with a view to preserving local biodiversity. The facility includes specific measures to allow wildlife, such as foxes and rabbits, to pass safely under the fences surrounding the site. This initiative underlines RWE’s commitment to ecological protection as it continues to expand its renewable energy portfolio.

The Bosco solar plant is just one part of RWE’s ambitious strategy in Italy, where the company already operates 16 wind farms with a total capacity of 527 MW , supplying more than 450,000 households. In addition, RWE is expanding its presence with innovative projects such as the agrophotovoltaic plants in Campania , which combine solar energy production with sustainable agriculture.
