Canadian company Xanadu has blazed a new trail in quantum computing by unveiling Aurora, the first scalable, modular, networked universal photonic quantum computer. This breakthrough positions Xanadu as a leader in the development of advanced computing technologies that operate at room temperature, using optical fibers and cutting-edge photonic components.
Modular design and scalability
Aurora is made up of four independent server racks housing a total of 35 photonic chips connected by 13 km of optical fiber. This modular design facilitates the integration of new components and allows the technology to be scaled up to millions of qubits, an essential feature for building quantum data centers of the future.
Christian Weedbrook, founder and CEO of Xanadu, said that this development demonstrates that photonics is the ideal medium for computing and networking, paving the way for fault-tolerant systems with a significant reduction in losses.
Aurora quantum computer photonic quantum technology
Aurora leverages the advancements made with the X8 and Borealis platforms, integrating technologies that enable quantum gate operations, real-time error correction, and quantum decoding under stringent speed conditions. This system is designed to overcome critical challenges in quantum computing , such as optical losses and fault tolerance.
