The Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM), in collaboration with Hyundai Motor and Kia, has developed the world’s first 2-liter ammonia-fueled engine. This innovative propulsion system represents a clean, carbon-free energy solution and is designed for applications in vehicles, ships, aircraft and industrial generators.
Ammonia engine with cutting-edge technology
The development of this engine includes a high-pressure liquid ammonia injection system, which overcomes the challenges associated with gaseous fuels. Thanks to this technology, the engine guarantees a stable and efficient fuel supply, achieving a specific power comparable to the best options on the market without the need for additional additives.
Researchers have also implemented key improvements to the ignition system, as well as to injection timing and valve operation, ensuring cleaner and more efficient combustion. In addition, the engine incorporates an aftertreatment system to minimise nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions and reduce unburned ammonia to a minimum.
Ammonia, known to be a renewable energy source, offers multiple advantages in the transition to a clean energy future. Unlike other fuels, its production can be completely sustainable through the use of solar or wind energy. In addition, its energy density and ease of transport make it a viable option for various industries.
Potential impact on transport and energy generation
Dr. Cheolwoong Park, principal investigator at KIMM , said that this development sets a new standard for ammonia-fueled engines, highlighting their crucial role in sustainable mobility and clean hydrogen production . Meanwhile, Dr. Seungwoo Lee from Hyundai Motor and Kia stressed that this technology could be key to overcoming the logistical challenges related to hydrogen transportation and storage.
The research, funded by Hyundai and Kia, is part of the project “ Evaluation of direct injection ammonia engines ”, marking an important step in the transition towards decarbonized energy systems.
With this innovation, ammonia is positioned as a versatile and efficient fuel, capable of transforming global mobility and contributing significantly to sustainability goals across various industries.
