On January 16th, Damen Shipyards Galati took a key step by cutting steel for the third Island-class ferry , part of BC Ferries’ ambitious order. This project, which involves the delivery of four electric ferries , reinforces both companies’ commitment to sustainability and innovation in maritime transport.

Technical details of the project for electric ferries

The Island-class vessels are designed to operate with zero emissions, aligning with BC Ferries’ strategy to dramatically reduce its carbon footprint by 2030. With these ferries, an annual reduction of 10,000 tonnes of CO2 is estimated, marking a significant advancement in sustainable maritime transport.

Based on Damen’s E3 design , these ferries are a combination of operational efficiency, environmental friendliness and economic viability. With capacity for 390 passengers and 47 vehicles, they will operate on key routes including Nanaimo to Gabriola Island and Campbell River to Quadra Island . Delivery is planned for 2027, bringing the number of Damen vessels in the BC Ferries fleet to ten.

Preparing the future of maritime transport

At the steel cutting event, Kommer Damen, Group President, highlighted the strategic relationship with BC Ferries, emphasizing that this collaboration is an example of how shipbuilding can adapt to changing customer needs while moving towards zero-emission operations.

In addition to the vessels, the company is providing the charging infrastructure required for electric operations. The ferries will recharge their batteries as passengers embark and disembark , ensuring an efficient transition to a cleaner shipping model.
