QuantumScape, the leading innovator of solid-state batteries, has made a significant breakthrough in the manufacturing of ceramic separators with the launch of its Cobra system. Designed to optimize the manufacturing process of solid-state separators, this system represents a crucial step in the commercialization of its high-performance batteries for electric vehicles (EVs).

QuantumScape improves efficiency with Cobra system

The Cobra system enables the company to improve the efficiency of the production of ceramic separators, an essential part in the manufacturing of these batteries. This innovative process not only facilitates the scalability of production, but also reduces manufacturing costs, paving the way for large-scale production of high-performance battery cells.

Tim Holme, the company’s co-founder and chief technology officer, expressed his enthusiasm for the team’s progress. ” Cobra is a real breakthrough in ceramic manufacturing and will pave the way for scaling up our battery technology ,” he commented.

Advances in the production of solid-state battery cells

The launch of Cobra coincides with the start of production of the first QSE-5 battery cells. These batteries, which achieve an energy density of 844 Wh/L, are designed to be fast-charged from 10% to 80% in just 12.2 minutes – a key feature for electric cars of the future. In addition, the company has begun shipping low-volume samples to automotive customers to test the cells on their platforms.

As Quantum Space technology advances, the company aims to integrate this innovative system into its large-scale production line, with the goal of reaching gigawatt-hour production by 2025.
