Petrobras and European Energy have signed a Head of Agreement (HoA ), following the announcement made in November 2023, for the establishment and development of a commercial-scale e-methanol production plant in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil.

The production of e-methanol

E-methanol implements low-carbon hydrogen, which is produced through a water electrolysis process, using renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. It is a versatile fuel for application in industrial processes and maritime transport.

In this partnership, European Energy will contribute its experience acquired with the construction of the first commercial e-methanol plant in Denmark, which will start operations at the end of 2024 and is expected to produce 32,000 tons of e-methanol per year.

Brazil’s Petrobras aims to strengthen its leadership in clean energy and contribute to reducing emissions in the country. The plant in Pernambuco will be a benchmark in the country and will mark an important step forward in the decarbonization of the Brazilian industry.

This agreement is part of Petrobras’ Strategic Plan 2050 , which aims to boost the development of cleaner and more sustainable energy. The e-methanol plant will not only contribute to reducing emissions, but will also allow Brazil to strengthen its productive capacity in renewable energy, becoming a key player in the global green fuels market.

The partnership with European Energy and the development of the plant in Brazil reinforce Petrobras’ commitment to the energy transition. This project is in line with international efforts to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and promote innovative energy solutions.

Petrobras and European Energy are collaborating to ensure that the Pernambuco plant becomes an innovation hub for clean energy production in Brazil, further boosting the development of green hydrogen and e-fuel technologies.
