A team of researchers from the University of California has developed a fabric inspired by squids , specifically their skin, capable of adapting to body temperature and improving the user’s comfort. This technology, which has been designed to be breathable, washable and easily integrated into clothing, could change the way we think about fashion.
Squid-inspired fabric does not lose its properties
The new fabric takes its cue from squid skin, which has the ability to change color and reflect light, allowing the animals to adapt to different environments. Scientists have mimicked this process to develop a fabric that regulates heat flow . Using a matrix of polymers with embedded metals, the researchers managed to make the material behave in a similar way to squid skin, reflecting or absorbing heat depending on the need.
This breakthrough promises to revolutionise the textile industry, especially in the field of sportswear and everyday clothing. As a fabric that breathes and can be washed without losing its properties, it could significantly reduce energy consumption in buildings and improve personal comfort without relying on external technologies such as heating or air conditioning systems.
When and how will this fabric be used?
The developers believe that this technology could be applied not only to clothing, but also to other types of textile products such as furniture, curtains and other items that require heat management . In addition, the researchers point out that their technology is scalable, meaning that it could be integrated into mass clothing manufacturing without high additional costs.
“ Squid skin is complex, consisting of multiple layers that work together to manipulate light and change the animal’s overall coloration and patterns ,” said Alon Gorodetsky, one of the study’s authors.
