Nuclear power plant secures funds to extend the useful life of the Atucha I power plant

This project will allow Argentina to continue developing technical capabilities that will position it for future nuclear projects.

The energy company Nucleoeléctrica Argentina has confirmed that the necessary funds have been secured to begin the life extension project of the Atucha I Nuclear Power Plant . This project will allow the plant to continue operating safely and efficiently for 20 more years, after completing its first operating cycle of 50 years of energy generation.

The Atucha I Nuclear Power Plant and its useful life extension

The announcement was made by the company’s president, Dr. Alberto Lamagna, who highlighted the importance of this renovation for the future of Argentina’s energy matrix . The technical maintenance shutdown began on September 29, 2024 and is expected to last 30 months. During this period, tasks will be carried out to ensure that the plant operates with the highest standards of safety and efficiency.

The Atucha I Power Plant, located in the city of Lima, province of Buenos Aires, is the first nuclear plant in Latin America . With an installed capacity of 362 MW, it has been a pillar in the generation of energy for Argentina for five decades. This life extension project is essential for Atucha I to continue contributing to the energy matrix, particularly at a time when nuclear energy is being revitalized as an option to reduce carbon emissions.

Dr. Lamagna also highlighted the national government’s commitment to strengthening the nuclear sector, which offers new opportunities for private investment and the development of advanced technologies, such as nuclear energy .

Maintenance and improvements to the Atucha I Power Plant

During the 30-month technical shutdown, inspections, component maintenance and technological improvements will be carried out to ensure the safe operation of Atucha I for two more decades. The entire process will be supervised by the Nuclear Regulatory Authority , ensuring that the highest national and international standards in nuclear safety are met.
