Karoon Energy has reported that the Who Dat East well, MC 509-1 (LLOG), has reached a measured depth of 6,614 meters in the 12-¼ inch well section, where the presence of hydrocarbons is revealed. In addition, intermediate wireline logging was completed prior to installing the 9-⅞-inch casing and the well will continue to drill to a planned final depth of 7,900 meters.
Hydrocarbons in turbidite sequences
In the next phase, the angle of the wellbore through the 12-¼-inch section is approximately 45 degrees. The data obtained during drilling and wireline logging have shown the presence of several sandstone layers with oil and gas in the targeted Middle Miocene turbidite sequences.
This preliminary interpretation suggests a total net hydrocarbon thickness of 44 meters within the target intervals, with 31 meters in two discrete reservoir units.
With respect to reservoir characteristics, net porosities average 25%, indicating good permeabilities ranging from 300 mD to more than 1000 mD. A gas-condensate hydrocarbon fluid type has also been identified, as anticipated for this well.
Additional analysis and drilling to confirm resources
As for the next steps, wireline logging data, reservoir fluid samples and reservoir fluids and other geoscientific data will be subjected to laboratory analysis and further studies to evaluate the resource potential of the hydrocarbon zones encountered. The future plan is to complete the installation of the 9 ⅞-inch casing before drilling to the planned total depth of approximately 7,900 meters in order to test the remaining targets.
Preliminary interpretation of the Who Dat East appraisal/exploration well data is encouraging. Early results suggest significant potential for a continuous hydrocarbon phase in several high quality sands correlated with the nearby MC-509 Exxon #1 exploration well.

Increased exploration activity in the Gulf of Mexico
The Who Dat East well, located in lease area MC 509-1, is 27 km east of the Who Dat Floating Production System (FPS) in water depth of approximately 1,300 meters. Pre-drill estimates for Who Dat East are 5.4 MMboe of 2C contingent resources and 10.7 MMboe of unrisked 2U prospective resources. The geological probability of success was estimated at 62%. These resource estimates may vary depending on laboratory analysis and additional studies.
Who Dat East Joint Venture participants include LLOG (operator, 40%), Karoon Energy (40%) and Westlawn (20%).
In addition to developments in Who Dat East, the energy industry in the Gulf of Mexico is seeing an increase in exploration activity due to recent technological advances and the stabilization of oil prices. oil prices . These trends could mean a renaissance in hydrocarbon production in the region, benefiting local economies and strengthening U.S. energy security.
