German startup NeoCarbon, focused on “Direct Air Capture”(DAC) technology, has announced the storage of CO2 with the use of environmentally friendly concrete from the company Carbonaide. This agreement will be focused on carbon dioxide capture and storage (CO₂), seeking to reduce carbon emissions in the construction industry and create opportunities for high quality, certified emissions.
CO2 storage in smart concrete
The company NeoCarbon is dedicated to the removal of CO₂ from the air using waste heat streams from industrial sites, which contributes in a way to the fight against climate change. This technology has received the backing of investors such as Speedinvest.
On the other hand, Carbonaide specializes in producing CO₂ emission-free concrete using carbon reuse and storage technologies developed at the VTT Technical Research Center in Finland.
One of the ways to achieve this is through the creation of a scalable carbon capture value chain. Therefore, NeoCarbon plans to combine its DAC technology with Carbonaide’s carbon storage solutions. Modular technology will enable rapid adoption of CO₂ capture, while applying the solution in permanent carbon storage, through the mineralization in concrete .
By combining NeoCarbon’s DAC technology with Carbonaide’s expertise in CO2 capture, the aim is to turn concrete production into a carbon sink. René Haas, CEO of NeoCarbon, detailed that the relevance of this collaboration could offer more green opportunities for the construction industry.
The first implementation is scheduled for 2025
On the other hand, the collaboration with NeoCarbon establishes new ecological and sustainable concrete production processes, under “a model based on fossil fuels to a more sustainable one,” according to Tapio Vehmas, CEO of Carbonaide. In addition, this alliance opens up new possibilities for carbon capture and use, enhancing opportunities for a more sustainable future in construction.
