North Star has secured a contract with Siemens Gamesa for the construction of a hybrid service operations vessel (SOV). This project is intended to operate under a long-term charter at the East Anglia THREE wind farm development, located in Suffolk, England.

The new hybrid ship

This is SOV’s first contract in the southern North Sea for the company, and it is expected to provide comprehensive support through its operational team located in the region. The new SOV, designed to house up to 60 Siemens Gamesa wind technicians, will be equipped with a height-adjustable motion compensated walkway and will feature North Star’s decision support system to meet zero carbon targets.

In addition, it is anticipated that this new project will open up great opportunities for the company’s experienced seafarers, as well as for those aspiring to join the crew, enhancing the local supply chain. This contract records the addition of the eighth wind-powered hybrid vessel to the to the organization’s fleet, expanding its capacity since entering the market two and a half years ago.

The vessel is scheduled to commence operations for the East Anglia THREE development in late 2026, managed by one of North Star’s two commissioning SOVs, the CSOV Kestrel, from April of the same year.

North Star’s approach

The company plans to recruit 34 additional crewmembers for this new SOV and continue to strengthen its infrastructure support services for large projects in the wind energy and oil and gas industries. With bases in Lowestoft, Aberdeen, Newcastle and Hamburg, the company plans to strengthen its pillars in support of the energy sector over the past four decades.
