EST-Floattech has been selected to supply the battery system for the new “E-LUV electric vessel” to be built by Coastal Workboats at its Stornoway shipyard.
The new electric vessel E-LUV
Following the allocation of an $8 million grant to Coastal Workboats, awarded under the context of the “Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition” , it will promote the United Kingdom’s first electric commercial boat and its corresponding charging station.
The company will commission and provide the battery for the E-LUV , designed for BV class classification and powering the country’s first commercial electric workboat. In addition, it will equip a shore power supply station. The boat will have a 2,400 kWh Octopus High Energy battery system from EST-Floattech, divided into two independent systems to power both fully electric navigation and various onboard equipment.
The E-LUV electric vessel will initially be trialled in the Shetland Islands, running 45-minute runs between West Burrafirth and Papa Stour, twice a day, five days a week, as part of a short-term demonstration phase to evaluate its performance and effectiveness in real operating conditions.
Maritime operations and systems integration
To support E-LUV operations, EST-Floattech will also provide 1,200 kWh of its battery system , which will be installed inside a 20-foot container. This container, which can function as a portable energy storage solution, will make it easier to charge the vessel and could be used as a range extender.
The system integration will be carried out in collaboration with MJR Power & Automation, while Renew Marine will be responsible for installing the complete system in the container.
Luke Parnell, director of engineering at Coastal Workboats, highlighted safety as one of the main advantages of the series octopus of EST-Floattech, citing innovation in the passive heat dissipation system as a crucial advancement for marine applications, reflecting the company’s commitment to high safety standards in its products.
