GKN Aerospace, a leading aerospace company, has announced its participation in the HyFIVE consortium to lead the development of emission-free liquid hydrogen fuel systems for aviation.

This strategic collaboration brings together several key partners, including Marshall, Parker Meggitt, the University of Manchester, the University of Bath and Cardiff University, with the aim of establishing a robust supply chain of cryogenic hydrogen systems for future aircraft, with zero carbon emissions.

HyFIVE consortium aims for zero emissions by 2050

It maintains its focus on ongoing development and testing of scalable technologies in liquid hydrogen fuel systems, culminating in a full demonstration of an integrated hydrogen fuel system for the future of aviation.

By leveraging the capabilities of each industry partner, such as Marshall’s expertise in fuel system design and integration and Parker Meggitt’s specialization in fuel system components and thermal management technologies, the consortium addresses technical, safety, certification and industrialization challenges associated with hydrogen fuel systems in aviation. As the aviation industry seeks to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, hydrogen propulsion presents itself as a critical pathway to decarbonization. decarbonization .

Max Brown, Vice President of Technology at GKN Aerospace said: “The HyFIVE liquid hydrogen fuel system program will complement our successful hydrogen electric propulsion program. We greatly value the fuel systems capability that Marshall and Parker bring to the table, and believe we now have a solid path to deliver the technology and supply chain needed for regional hydrogen aircraft and beyond. This unique industry partnership, combined with the expertise of leading academics, represents a significant step towards a sustainable future for aviation.”.
