Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has entered into a collaboration with KBR, a U.S. company, through a licensing agreement, with the aim of collaborating and contribute in cutting-edge technology for CO₂ capture in the hydrogen project. The project is part of the Hydrogen Production Plant 2 (HPP2), a low-carbon project in Cheshire, northwest England.

The hydrogen project in new “HPP2” plant

The sites selected for the project will be the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex. This complex is known for housing one of the most important refineries in the UK and will be the site where EET Hydrogen, part of the Essar Group, will undertake the construction of HPP2. The contribution of KBR will focus on providing the necessary technology for the hydrogen production process, as well as the initial engineering design.

As an integral part of the agreement, MHI agrees to license its KM CDR process, an advanced CO₂ capture technology resulting from its collaboration with Kansai Electric Power. In addition, MHI will be responsible for providing the process design package for the new facility dedicated to CO₂ capture after combustion.

Potential supply capacities

The HPP2 plant, with an annual production capacity of around 230,000 tons of hydrogen, aims to be recognized as the largest low-carbon hydrogen production facility in the United Kingdom once it is completed and begins normal operations.

The goal of the companies is to achieve the largest carbon footprint reduction for the country. Once the CO₂ is captured, it will be permanently stored in depleted gas fields under the sea, specifically in Liverpool Bay.

EET Hydrogen, which leads the hydrogen production initiative within the HyNet conglomerate, has been selected along with the East Coast cluster by the UK Government’s Department of Energy Security and Grid Zero (DESNZ) as one of the initial clusters.

Increase capacity to capture more tons of CO₂.

The implementation of HPP2 will complement Hydrogen Production Plant 1 (HPP1), thus expanding the infrastructure for large-scale, low-carbon hydrogen production planned by EET Hydrogen within the HyNet cluster. HPP1 will feature an initial production capacity of 350 MW, with the potential to capture approximately 600,000 tons of CO₂ annually.

This joint effort between HPP1 and HPP2 will facilitate the transition of local industrial and power generation companies to low-carbon energy sources. As a result, a significant reduction in carbon emissions is expected in the northwest region, estimated at 2.5 million tons per year.
