Compañías se asocian para descarbonizar la producción de calor industrial

EDP aims to develop up to 400 MW of wind and solar energy in the medium term. This project will power up to 2 GWh from Rondo’s Heat Batteries facility, ushering in a new era of clean, affordable, large-scale industrial heat production through the power of wind and sun.

Both companies seek to power the Rondo Heat Batteries with renewable electricity from both decentralized solar projects and long-term agreements from EDP’s wind and solar assets, offering their commercial and industrial customers a comprehensive, emission-free heat and power solution.

Wind and solar projects for industrial heat production

EDP a global leader in renewable energies, will be in charge of the development of wind farms and solar and solar farms, both distributed and large-scale. The distributed projects will be co-located with Rondo’s Heat Batteries, providing a safe, economical and non-combustion solution for decarbonizing heat-requiring industries, from the food and beverage sector to large chemical complexes.

Importantly, Rondo’s Heat Coils convert intermittent electrical energy into continuous high-temperature heat, also offering the possibility of generating continuous power through a combined heat and power configuration. This collaboration between EDP and Rondo promises to supplying renewable energy and heat contracts 24 hours a day, 7 days a weekThis will result in significant decarbonization and energy savings, driven by EDP’s competitive renewable electricity and facilitated by Rondo’s Heat Batteries technology.

Vera Pinto Pereira, from EDP, and John O’Donnell, from Rondo Energy highlighted the importance of this partnership in meeting customers’ energy needs in a clean, affordable and reliable way, opening a new path towards decarbonization that EDP aims to lead in Europe.

The partnership between EDP and Rondo, launched in 2023 through EDP’s Free Electrons program, promises to replace the use of fossil fuels in industrial heat production, a sector responsible for 15% of global CO₂ emissions. This shift to renewable energy represents a 7 TW opportunity and is crucial to combat climate change effectively and on a large scale.

The partnership between EDP and Rondo Energy not only opens the door to a greener and more sustainable industry, but also sets a model for the successful integration of renewable energy solutions in industrial processes worldwide.
