The construction of the mega solar power project in the Philippines is led by Solar Philippines Nueva Ecija Corporation (SPNEC). This monumental effort is underway in the provinces of Nueva Ecija and Bulacan, with SPNEC Vice President Leandro Leviste announcing the start of cleanup operations in an area of 3,500 hectares.
About the Philippine mega solar project
The project includes the installation of more than 5 million solar panels and is moving forward with the connection to the national power grid. Leviste has indicated that the first phase of the project is expected to be operational by the first quarter of 2026 and to achieve this goal, the company is stepping up site preparation activities.
The initial focus of the Terra Solar project, a subsidiary of SPNEC, is in Peñaranda, Nueva Ecija, where the installation of solar panels for the first solar development in the town has already been completed.
With an ambitious target of 3,400 MW of solar panel capacity and 4,000 MWh of battery storage, the project has an estimated cost of Php200 billion. Once completed, it is anticipated to generate approximately 5 billion kWh annually, which will constitute about 5% of the total Philippine grid and 12% of its total demand.
It is important to note that this project is set to surpass in magnitude the Bhadla Solar Park in India and the Golmud Solar Park in China, which are currently the largest in the world with more than 2.2 GW. It will also exceed the total capacity of all grid-connected solar projects in the Philippines, which total more than 1.5 GW.
The recent investment of Php15.9 billion by MGen Renewable Energy, Inc. (MGreen) at SPNEC on December 27, 2023, underscores the commitment to this development. This project not only marks a milestone in the advancement of renewable energy renewable energy in the Philippines in the Philippines but also contributes significantly to the global fight against climate change, highlighting the growing potential of solar energy.
