The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) has awarded a total of 3,742 MW of offshore wind energy capacity to Invenergy’s Leading Light Wind projects. Invenergy y energyRE and Attentive Energy Two projects by Attentive Energy LLC.
About offshore wind capacity allocation
In a unanimous decision, the NJBPU allocated 2,400 MW of capacity to the Leading Light Wind project and 1,342 MW to the Attentive Energy Two project. Together, these projects will bring $6.8 billion in economic benefits to New Jersey and generate enough domestic energy to power 1.8 million homes.
Governor Phil Murphy expressed his enthusiasm for the Round 3 awards, noting that these projects are indisputable proof of the promising future of offshore wind energy in New Jersey. According to Murphy, the state stands out as an unrivaled location for major global developers, contributing to the creation of high-paying jobs and environmental benefits and making significant progress toward the goal of a clean energy 100% clean energy economy by 2035.
For her part, NJBPU President Christine Guhl-Sadovy reiterated New Jersey’s commitment to the development of a robust offshore wind industry, noting that these projects represent the long-term benefits of offshore wind energy: clean energy that will provide environmental benefits for future generations, economic benefits to boost the state’s economy for decades to come, and thousands of well-paying, sustainable jobs for families.
Likewise, Tim Sullivan, executive director of the NJEDA, underscored the significant progress these projects represent for Governor Murphy’s mission to achieve 100% clean energy and position New Jersey as a national leader in the offshore wind industry. Sullivan highlighted offshore wind as a unique opportunity to invest in the state’s long-term economic growth and sustainability, as it has already begun to create good-paying, sustainable jobs in southern New Jersey.
Similarly, Shawn M. LaTourette, Commissioner of Environmental Protection, emphasized the importance of offshore wind energy development as a crucial step in achieving the goal of 100% clean energy by 2035 and mitigating the impacts of climate change. LaTourette highlighted DEP’s commitment to this effort and its work to ensure that offshore wind energy development protects the state’s natural resources while providing clean energy to millions of homes and businesses and creating green jobs that benefit all people and communities in New Jersey.
New Jersey and offshore wind energy projects
These projects are critical to strengthening New Jersey’s position as a hub in the offshore wind energy supply chain. Both projects have committed to support the creation of a tower manufacturer at the New Jersey Wind Port, in addition to obtaining monopiles and investing in the expansion of the EEW monopile facility at the Port of Paulsboro.
It is estimated that the projects will create more than 27,000 full time equivalent direct, indirect and induced job years.
The state’s comprehensive strategy for offshore wind energy development seeks to ensure the best overall value for ratepayers while protecting the environment and the interests of commercial and recreational fisheries. In addition to economic benefits and job creation, the awarded projects have also committed to support research, monitoring, environmental and fisheries conservation efforts with a total contribution of more than $60 million.
The total bill impact of the projects for residential customers will be $6.84 per month, beginning only once these offshore wind facilities are operational and supplying clean electricity to the New Jersey grid.
The Murphy Administration has led a comprehensive, whole-of-government effort to strengthen the state’s transition to clean energy by focusing on jobs and economic growth. This includes the development of New Jersey’s first wind port. built specifically in Salem County, the establishment of a Wind Institute administered by the New Jersey Economic Development Authority to coordinate workforce development and research and development in offshore wind energy, and a $250 million investment in the Port of Paulsboro to establish a monopile manufacturing facility.
