Amazon formalized a corporate power purchase agreement (CPPA) with ENGIE , owner of the Moray West offshore wind project through Ocean Winds, the joint venture between ENGIE and EDP Renewables. This agreement implies a total generation capacity of 473 MW from the Moray West offshore wind farm, which will be operational at the end of this year.

This power is enough to supply the equivalent of more than 650,000 homes in the United Kingdom annually and represents more than half of the total installed capacity of the aforementioned offshore wind farm, which reaches 882 MW.

It is important to note that said project had already committed 100 MW of its capacity from 2022, the date on which Google established a long-term corporate power purchase agreement with ENGIE for this project. Located in the Moray Firth in north-east Scotland, the offshore wind farm is under construction, with foundation installation underway.

About the Moray West Offshore Wind Project

Moray West will be made up of 60 Siemens Gamesa 14.7 MW wind turbines. It is expected to begin generating energy this year and to reach full operation in 2025. Ocean Winds is executing an accelerated development and construction plan, supported by site capacity, to meet Amazon’s goal of powering all of its operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025, moving five years ahead of the company’s original goal.

According to a Moray West press release, Amazon’s investment in solar and wind projects has established it as the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy in Europe and the United Kingdom.

It should be noted that last year, the technology company established a collaboration agreement with Iberdrola, which includes the acquisition of energy from two Iberdrola offshore wind farms in Germany, specifically Baltic Eagle and Windanker .

In 2020, Amazon entered into a ten-year power purchase agreement with Ørsted to source 250 MW of output from the Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind farm, which has a total capacity of 900 MW in Germany. Additionally, Amazon expanded the reserved capacity by a further 100 MW in the following year.
