The Japanese gas companies Tokyo Gas and Osaka Gas have signed a collaboration agreement with Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company – Masdar and the Japanese company Inpex Corporation to carry out a joint feasibility study on the production of e-methane in Abu Dhabi,
According to Inpex, this agreement aims for Tokyo Gas and Osaka Gas to introduce e-methane to supply 1% of their respective annual urban gas demand by 2030, with the aspiration of further increasing the volume of introduction in the whole of its global projects for the year 2050.
Let us remember that Masdar and Inpex had already been carrying out a study to produce e-methane through the use of low-cost renewable energy in Abu Dhabi, based on an agreement signed on July 17, 2023. Together with Tokyo Gas and Osaka Gas, the partners will carry out an economic evaluation of the production and procurement of raw materials such as green hydrogen and CO 2 , as well as the production and transportation of e-methane . In addition, the global impacts on the reduction of CO 2 emissions will be analyzed.
The alliance of Japanese gas companies
The four participants aim to early establish an e-methane supply chain from the United Arab Emirates to Japan, with the aim of contributing to the common goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, as stated by the United Arab Emirates and the Japanese governments, according to Inpex.
It is relevant to note that it is argued that e-methane is compatible with existing LNG infrastructure, including LNG tanks and terminals, as well as with urban gas infrastructure, which includes gas pipelines and gas consumption equipment, which limits the social costs associated with its implementation. Therefore, according to Inpex, it is considered a pragmatic carbon-neutral or low-carbon solution for thermal sectors where electrification represents a challenge.
Additionally, it is anticipated that it will have applications in the power generation and transportation sectors.
