New lithium plant in Bolivia
Yacimientos de Litio Bolivianos (YLB) signed an agreement with the Chinese consortium CBC to establish a Pilot Plant using Direct Lithium Extraction (EDL) technology in the Uyuni salt flat, Potosí. According to local reports, this second agreement implies an initial production capacity of 2,500 tons of lithium carbonate per year, with an approximate investment of 90 million dollars.
The Bolivian president, Luis Arce, highlighted the importance of this step for the consolidation of the lithium industry and was present at the agreement signing ceremony.
“ This act is very important, this is the second agreement that our company YLB has already signed with these companies that have decided to come and bet on Bolivian lithium to continue with the industrialization process ,” he stated.
The president emphasized the growing global demand for lithium and underlined the importance of “facing the challenge” by accelerating the process, after several years of delay in this area.
“ Unfortunately, in the past we did not have, we did not print the necessary speed in this area, but the national government has made the clear decision that this issue of lithium industrialization is a central element in government policy ,” he stated.
It is important to mention that last December, Bolivia signed an agreement with Uranium One Group, a Russian company, to build the first semi-industrial plant with EDL technology in Potosí, with an estimated investment of 450 million dollars.
