TotalEnergies and CorPower Ocean have joined forces to carry out a pilot project for an anchored wave electricity generation system, with technology developed from the studies and contributions of Swedish cardiologist Stig Lundbäck.

HiWave-5: the electricity generation system inspired by the human heart

The collaboration between the French oil giant and the Swedish specialist aims to explore the conversion of the movement of ocean waves into electricity. This pilot project, called HiWave-5 , will be located in the north of Portugal, in Agucadoura, and will include the installation of a WEC device, followed by three more advanced versions for evaluation.

During the evaluation of the HiWave-5 pilot project, the performance of key components such as converters, moorings, cabling and a center for energy export will be analyzed. CorPower, the entity behind the project, will be in charge of collecting the necessary information.

For its part, TotalEnergies will provide its experience in installation, maintenance and offshore operations. The technology that harnesses wave motion is based on the pumping principle of the human heart, which uses stored hydraulic pressure to provide force for the return stroke, meaning it only requires the heart muscles to pump in one direction, as indicated by CorPower on its website.

Similarly, “Our wave energy converters use a pretensioning system to pull the buoy down. The waves push the buoy up, while the stored pressure provides return force to propel the buoy down. This results in equal power production in both directions and a lightweight system“they explained.

The design of the CorPower Ocean WEC arose from studies by Swedish cardiologist Stig Lundbäck: ” the unit is based on the doctor’s patents, some of which are inspired by his research on the control and pumping functions of the heart ,” they explained from the signature. The concept was first thought of in 2009.

Since 2012, the technology has been developed and verified through a structured five-stage process, following IEA-OES/ETIP Ocean best practices. In each phase of testing, the technology has exhibited exceptional performance, backed by metrics that underline the potential of wave energy as a reliable and competitive energy source.

For his part, Kevin Rebenius, the company’s commercial director, described the pilot program as an “effective tool to strengthen confidence in our technology and implementation capacity.” Meanwhile, Corentin de Leffe, R&D project director at TotalEnergies, stated that its participation “testifies its commitment to the development of new solutions for decarbonization.”
