Oman’s Ministry of Energy and Minerals and Hydrogen signed a Joint Study Agreement with the Port of Amsterdam, Zenith Energy Terminals and GasLog for the creation of a liquid green hydrogen corridor aimed at exporting green hydrogen produced in Oman to Europe.

Green hydrogen corridor: a milestone

This milestone, considered the first large-scale liquid hydrogen commercial corridor in the world, was formalized in the Oman Pavilion during COP28 in Dubai , with the signature of the country’s Minister, Eng. Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi, and the climate representative of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Prince James of Bourbon of Parma.

According to the official statement, the agreement involves carrying out a thorough assessment of the requirements necessary to establish an open hydrogen liquefaction, storage and export facility in Oman, together with the provision of specialized vessels for the transport of liquid hydrogen, currently in development process by GasLog.

The Zenith Energy terminal is planned to serve as an arrival point for the import, regasification and subsequent distribution of hydrogen produced in Oman, targeting both local buyers in the port of Amsterdam and large industries across Europe. Likewise, the open access liquefaction facility will provide the Oman government with the opportunity to explore profitable export routes to other global markets, according to the statement.

The industry hopes that this open access liquefaction facility will unlock vast potential for such projects, offering liquid hydrogen as a practical medium that can be used by individual projects for export purposes.

With the long-term goal of achieving net emissions neutrality by 2050, the government of Oman is implementing a hydrogen strategy that aims to take advantage of the country’s abundant wind and solar energy, as well as existing port and industrial infrastructure, with the aim of exporting to international markets in Europe and Asia.

Hydrom is responsible for orchestrating the end-to-end development of the hydrogen sector in Oman, taking responsibility for master planning, facilitating the allocation of government land to hydrogen developers and overseeing project execution.
