Alliance for energy storage
During the Iberian Science Day, a symposium held at the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL), the Ministry of Education, Science and Training announced its collaboration with Portugal in research on sustainable energies and energy storage, through the creation of centers outstanding research projects in both countries.
This event included the participation of the Secretary General of Science, Technology and Innovation, Javier de Francisco Morcillo, as well as the main researchers of the Iberian Center for Research in Energy Storage (CIIAE), Breogán Pato and Francisco Javier Gallego. In addition, the meeting was chaired by the president of the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation (FCT), Madalena Alves and the general secretary of Research of the Ministry of Science and Innovation of Spain, Raquel Yotti.
In his speech, the Secretary General of Science, Technology and Innovation highlighted that nearly 40 researchers of various nationalities are actively involved in the temporary facilities of the Iberian Center for Research in Energy Storage (CIIAE) located at the Polytechnic School of the University of Estremadura. It was mentioned that equipment has already been acquired for future facilities, according to the Extremadura Government in a press release.
It was also highlighted that the CIIAE has obtained a European project within the “Horizon Europe” program focused on the Circular Economy, two national public-private collaboration projects and five regional public-private collaboration projects. These projects are promoting interaction between CIIAE members and researchers from the University of Extremadura. During the intervention of the Secretary General of Extremadura, a call currently open for the hiring of 43 new researchers at the CIIAE was announced.
In this sense, Javier de Francisco highlighted that the CIIAE is already generating research results and that its researchers are highly committed, as highlighted at the Iberian Science Day in Braga.
Likewise, during the day, the representation of Extremadura established communication with the representatives of the Government of Spain, to whom they informed that the start of the works is “imminent” and that it is crucial to reactivate the monitoring commissions by both the Government of Spain as well as the Junta de Extremadura. Contact was also established with the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education of Portugal, Elvira Fortunato, with the purpose of laying the foundations to strengthen relations between both countries and fully involve the neighboring country in the creation of the CIIAE.
On the other hand, researchers from Extremadura also established connections with INL researchers with a view to future collaborations in the field of research.
