ExRobotics has launched an improved version of its ATEX certified inspection robot, in collaboration with Shell Pernis and DOW Terneuzen. Although its previous version (ExR-1) met explosion safety standards, industrial companies faced significant limitations for its use in inspections.

That’s why between 2020 and 2022, ExRobotics, Shell and Dow undertook an intensive effort to explore how robots could take over inspection tasks commonly performed by human operators.

Initially, pilot tests were carried out with the ExR-1 robot, but it quickly became clear that its deployment was restricted. With this experience, the ExR-2 robot was developed, marking a significant innovation by allowing the new robot to operate completely autonomously, eliminating the need for remote control that was present in the previous variant.

An autonomous robot that also detects emissions

ExRobotics’ robot is also designed for emissions detection , allowing industrial facilities to identify leaks of gases such as methane and benzene to make a crucial contribution to reducing harmful emissions. This detector operates autonomously, without the need for human intervention. Perform automated daily inspections, following predefined routes.

Should dangerous levels of gases be detected, the robot automatically sends a notification to the plant control room, providing the precise location of the leak to the operator, who can safely take action to mitigate or contain fugitive emissions.

Progress continues

ExRobotics is developing the next phase, which involves the integration of a digital twin with inspection data and artificial intelligence technology. This digital twin will be integrated with clients’ existing 3D models (asset twin), and all collected data will be incorporated into the digital environment in a time sequence.

This gives customers the ability to add other data to 3D models, such as factory information, IoT data, and drone inspection results.
