The Canary Islands Technological Institute (ITC) has announced the inauguration of Biogreenfinery, the first biorefinery completely based on renewable energy in the Canary Islands. With this new infrastructure, the Canary Islands are positioned at the forefront of research in hydrogen and renewable fuels, which has required an investment of approximately 6 million euros.

The main objective of the project is to promote the transition from fossil fuels to renewable fuels in the region. In this regard, the Minister of Universities, Science and Innovation of the Government of the Canary Islands, Migdalia Machín, highlighted that the experimental biorefinery Biogreenfinery is contributing significantly to the decarbonization of the transport sector in the Canary Islands.

Likewise, the international conference on green hydrogen and synthetic fuels taking place in Gran Canaria has witnessed the presentation of an innovative pilot plant for the production of completely renewable and self-sufficient biofuels.

About Biogreenfinery: the 100% renewable biorefinery

The biorefinery, located in an area of 2,000 m2 within the facilities of the Canary Islands Technological Institute in the southeast of Gran Canaria, it operates autonomously without connection to the electrical grid, achieving this through a hybrid system that combines a wind-photovoltaic plant and a group of biodiesel produced in the same center. investigation. This system provides the renewable energy needed to produce green hydrogen .

The main purpose of this facility is to evaluate the production of hydrogen for land transportation, the manufacture of green ammonia for use in navigation, and research into future biofuels for aviation applications.

Energy consumption in the facilities can be adjusted according to the availability of renewable resources thanks to the presence of two electrolyzers with capacities of 1 kgH2/h and 3 kgH2/h, a nitrogen generator of 4.2 kgN2/h, a HABER reactor -BOSCH, gas storage systems, a charging station for hydrogen vehicles, two hydrogen-powered cars and a bus that uses hydrogen fuel cells.

In addition to these facilities, there is an independent renewable energy production system that supplies the gas facilities. This includes a total capacity of 325 kW of solar energy, 100 kW of wind energy, a 100 kW/400 kWh battery bank and a 200 kVA biodiesel group.

It should be noted that the Canary Islands Technological Institute (ITC) has set itself an important challenge: to locally produce clean and sustainable fuels for use in transportation . This includes the generation of green hydrogen for land vehicles and the production of synthetic fuels for ships and aircraft. This approach has the dual purpose of reducing the carbon footprint in transport and promoting a new energy industry in the Canary Islands, with the aim of generating green jobs in the region.

Likewise, the ITC R&D director, Gonzalo Piernavieja, has highlighted the substantial investment destined to make this project a reality, which has had a budget of 5.6 million euros financed entirely by the Government of the Canary Islands through from the REACT-EU Fund, as part of the European Next Generation EU programme.
