The Miura 1 mission has not concluded in the best way, as the rocket that marked Spain’s entry into the space race successfully completed its 12-minute flight last Saturday and was expected to land in the Atlantic Ocean.
The company PLD Space, based in Elche and responsible for its development, admitted in a message on X that the remains of the rocket could not be recovered .
What happened to the Miura 1?
The ship was equipped with trajectory tracking systems that allowed it to predict its impact location and two ships were prepared in the area for recovery. However, it was not possible to recover the remains and it is speculated that it may have been damaged upon impact with the water, resulting in its sinking.
Despite this eventuality, the company maintains that this does not affect the success of the mission as a whole. The main mission, which was to demonstrate the ability to put satellites into orbit and acquire knowledge to apply in the development of the Miura 5, which is under construction, has been accomplished.
Miura 1 transported 100 kg of cargo from the German Center for Applied Space Technology and Microgravity, which is part of the University of Bremen. During the 12 minutes it remained in space, experts had the opportunity to collect detailed information on various aspects, including the performance of the engine, the aerodynamic behavior of the rocket and all its subsystems, as well as monitoring its trajectory.
As a reminder, the launch occurred early Saturday morning, after two previous attempts that were unsuccessful. The rocket successfully followed all the planned stages and reached an altitude of approximately 50 km, which represents leaving the Earth’s atmosphere but not reaching orbit, which begins at 100 km. The results obtained are being analyzed by PLD Space, with the intention of ensuring that the launch of its largest rocket, scheduled for 2025 from French Guiana, is a success.
