This week the Hydrogen Americas 2023 Summit & Exhibition took place in Washington, in which various government officials from the region actively participated. During this event, the Minister of Industry and Energy, Omar Paganini, detailed the advantages that Uruguay has to consolidate itself as an important global player in the production of emerging sustainable energies, including green hydrogen and its derivatives.
In this sense, Uruguay has established a long-term vision with the objective of becoming a leading supplier and exporter of green hydrogen and its related products. This strategic planning contemplates an investment of 20 billion dollars and the creation of 35,000 jobs by 2040.
“ Uruguay will be able to provide sustainable and diversified energy to achieve decarbonization at a global level ,” said Paganini during the meeting organized by the Sustainable Energy Council and the United States Department of Energy.
The minister pointed out that the country has highly favorable conditions for the generation of renewable energy, including solar and wind sources , in addition to an abundant availability of CO 2 of biogenic origin, oils and animal fats. All this places the country in a prominent position worldwide in the development of sustainable energies.
More than 3,000 industry leaders participated in the conference, including members and government representatives. The purpose of the forum was to facilitate the connection between investors to carry out international projects related to green hydrogen and its derivatives.
The US could ally with Uruguay
For her part, the Secretary of Energy of the United States, Jennifer Granholm, stressed the importance of sharing information as a fundamental basis for establishing solid alliances. In this sense, he expressed the United States’ interest in collaborating with countries such as Chile, which is expanding its electrolysis capacity to 5 GW by 2025, Brazil, which has investment plans worth US$ 200 billion in clean hydrogen during the next two decades, Uruguay, which projects the creation of 35,000 direct jobs in the clean hydrogen industry, and Canada, which aims to provide up to 30% of its energy from hydrogen by 2050.
After the conference, Minister Paganini met with the Undersecretary of Energy, David Turk, and they agreed on a series of initiatives to follow up on this collaboration.
