The Latin American and Caribbean office of the Airports Council International (ACI-LAC) has announced that El Dorado International Airport has become the first in the region to achieve Level 4 “transformation” within the Airport Accreditation program. ACI Airport Carbon.
This program is a global initiative that recognizes the efforts of airports in measuring, managing and reducing CO 2 emissions. This program distinguishes between six practical levels ranging from mapping to transition to net zero.

The air transport terminal has been participating in this program since 2017. By achieving this level, you demonstrate a comprehensive approach to managing CO 2 emissions, including implementing significant measures to reduce these emissions and collaborating with various stakeholders to jointly address environmental challenges.
Actions carried out by El Dorado include investing in renewable energy sources, adopting more energy-efficient technologies, promoting waste reduction and participating in community projects to offset carbon emissions .
The solutions implemented by El Dorado Airport
Installation of more than 11 thousand solar panels
It was inaugurated in 2016 and is operated by the companies Celsia and Odinsa, both belonging to Grupo Argos, which joined together with the purpose of converting the El Dorado International Airport into the most ecological in the region, with the aim of stopping emitting 1,372 tons of CO 2 dioxide per year. This system has a generation capacity of 2,800 kWp and produces 3,917,109 kWh of energy annually, which is equivalent to the energy consumption of 1,590 homes.
Implementation of LED bulbs
The air transport terminal invested more than $15 billion in the installation and maintenance of the new lights on the south runway. These tasks were carried out in collaboration with Civil Aeronautics and are part of a project that amounts to $20 billion. These luminaires represent one of the key technologies that improve the safety of landing and takeoff operations, especially in unfavorable and adverse weather conditions.
Installation of two solar panel systems in neighboring schools
El Dorado International Airport has implemented 12 solar panels on the roof of the Rodrigo Arenas Betancourt IED School in Bogotá, with the aim of contributing to the reduction of the carbon footprint in the town of Fontibón. Through this project, the air terminal expects to reduce environmental emissions by 57% by 2028.
The Airports Council International for Latin America and the Caribbean has praised the achievement achieved by El Dorado International Airport and has encouraged others in the region to follow its example and take a proactive approach on their path to environmental excellence.
“El Dorado’s achievement is admirable and sets an inspiring precedent for all air terminals throughout Latin America and the Caribbean,” said Rafael Echevarne, Director General of ACI-LAC.
