LAMOR’s technological adaptability highlighted at SLOM 2025
During his participation in the SLOM 2025 event, Richard Sims, LAMOR's environmental protection advisor, shared important details about how the company designs its technological solutions to address spills in port, tropical and coastal environments in Latin America.
This interview revealed how a company with a presence in more than 100 countries manages to combine technical know-how, innovation and a local operational network to respond quickly to environmental emergencies, even in complex and diverse contexts.
A global company with local knowledge
LAMOR Corporation is a Finnish firm specializing in environmental solutions, with a focus on oil spill cleanup, hazardous materials recycling, soil remediation and water treatment. Its work philosophy is based on a "global-local" operating model, meaning it uses standardized technological solutions that are adapted to the specific environment where they are implemented.
With more than 1,200 active professionals and a network of strategic partners, the company operates in more than 100 countries, including several Latin American markets such as Peru, Ecuador, Brazil and Argentina.
Technology adapted to each environment
One of the highlights of the conversation with Richard Sims was LAMOR's ability to adjust its technology depending on local conditions. "There is no one-size-fits-all approach that works for all scenarios. We tailor skimmers, containment booms and storage systems depending on the type of oil, the salinity of the water and the natural environment," Sims explained.
For example, in a recent project at the Port of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, the company delivered a compact, easy-to-operate package that included a rapid deployment boom, simple storage system and basic skimmers. All equipment was installed in a 10-ft container, which facilitated immediate response.
This type of solution responds to an established principle: speed of reaction. "Spills don't wait. Having complex equipment that takes time to deploy can make the problem worse. That's why we design for immediate action," he said.
Scalable response levels
The company also works with a tiered strategy approach, known as "tiers".
- Tier 1: it is a local and controlled response, designed for small incidents.
- Tier 2: involves regional resources and increased coordination, especially if the spill exceeds the boundaries of a port facility.
- Tier 3: the most critical level, where international support and highly specialized teams are required.
This model allows resources to be activated according to the severity of the event, avoiding over-response and maximizing the efficiency of incident response.

Equipment designed to last... and be recycled
One of LAMOR 's operational pillars is the design of equipment based on circular economy principles. This involves combining high technical performance, with the guarantee that the materials used can be recycled at the end of their useful life. As Sims explains, the company develops technology designed to remain operational for many years and, when it eventually enters the waste stream, ensures that its components do not end up in a landfill.
Training to strengthen local capacities
Another central component of LAMOR 's work is its certified training offer. The company offers programs developed together with the International Nautical Institute, with differentiated levels:
- Level 1: oriented to operative personnel working in the field.
- Level 2: for middle managers in charge of incident management.
- Level 3: aimed at authorities or strategic decision-makers.
In addition, the company customizes these programs according to the regulations and particularities of each region. For example, if a country allows
Operating experience in Latin America
During the interview, Richard Sims stressed that LAMOR has recently developed operations in Ecuador and Peru, mobilizing regional teams to act on the ground. Although the company is international, its strategy prioritizes the use of local talent. "They know the environment, speak the language and understand the clients. That makes it much easier to respond effectively," he said.
When events require a higher level of complexity, LAMOR complements local teams with international specialists. In this way, they combine agility in action with global technical expertise.
