In the industrial sector, the tank abandonment is a regulated practice that seeks to disable tanks out of use without physically removing them from the subsoil. This decision is taken to avoid structural risks, reduce operating costs and comply with environmental regulations. When a tank no longer serves active functions, simply leaving it empty is not an option, as it may represent an environmental and structural risk.
Injection molded foam: the fast, safe and environmentally friendly alternative
Faced with this challenge, Southern Foam Insulation Inc. offers an innovative solution using injected foam. According to Mike Brown, President of the company, instead of resorting to sand, concrete or other materials that require heavy machinery and excavation, this technique allows the tank to be completely filled with an inert material directly from the surface. The process takes approximately two hours per 10,000-gallon tank, allowing daily volumes of up to 80,000 gallons to be covered, all from a compact 26-foot truck with all the equipment integrated.
Operational advantages with environmental commitment
Among the great advantages of this system are its speed of execution, low impact on the site and logistical ease. Only access to a local water source is required, as the foam is manufactured directly on site. In addition, the technique does not require entering the interior of the tank, which substantially improves operator safety and reduces labor costs.
On the other hand, the material used by Southern Foam Insulation is biodegradable and complies with EPA standards, which ensures that the abandoned tank does not pose a threat to the environment. If it is ever decided to remove the tank, this procedure does not hinder excavation, as the foam only adds about 4,000 pounds of weight to a 10,000-gallon tank and can be disposed of in a local landfill without major complications.

A practical solution with a long-term vision
Thanks to its efficiency, safety and environmental friendliness, this technique is presented as a more effective option for the abandonment of subway tanks in industrial, commercial or infrastructure facilities. Southern Foam Insulation Inc.’s proposal is a clear example of how technology can facilitate complex processes, reducing environmental impact without compromising site operability.
