Pipeline inspection is a critical challenge in the industry, especially in hard-to-reach areas where corrosion and wall thickness loss can compromise the safety and operability of facilities. In this context, Guided Ultrasonics Ltd. (GUL) has developed the QSR1 and QSR Axial systems, two short-range scanning solutions for anomaly detection using guided wave technology.
Cutting-edge technology for accurate measurements
The QSR (Quantitative Short-Range) systems use high-frequency guided waves to provide quantitative measurements of wall thickness loss in metallic pipelines. Unlike conventional methods, QSR does not require direct access to the affected area, allowing for the inspection of complex structures without operational disruptions.
Two versions, multiple applications:
- QSR1: Sends waves around the pipeline, ideal for simple supports and hard-to-access areas where corrosion often goes unnoticed.
- QSR Axial: Sends waves along the pipeline, enabling the detection of material loss in wall penetrations, soil-to-air interfaces, and other critical applications.
Minimal preparation and automatic configuration
One of the greatest benefits of QSR is its easy implementation. There is no need to remove coatings from the inspected area if they do not exceed 1 mm in thickness, and the equipment automatically adjusts scanning parameters based on the pipeline thickness. This reduces preparation times and simplifies field use.

Integration with AI-based software for optimized analysis
The QSR system not only captures data with high precision but features a cloud-based platform that employs machine learning to interpret results. This technology enables the detection of thickness loss patterns with a level of accuracy superior to traditional manual analysis.
Comprehensive training and specialized technical support
GUL provides its customers with comprehensive training and specialized technical support, ensuring that users can maximize the QSR system’s capabilities. The training program includes:
- A 4-day in-person course on operation and data analysis.
- On-site supervision to validate initial inspections.
- Continuous technical assistance for report interpretation.
A solution adaptable to various industrial needs
The QSR system adapts to pipelines of different sizes and thicknesses. QSR1 is ideal for pipelines ranging from 6″ to 24″, while QSR Axial covers from 4″ to virtually any larger diameter. Currently, the system supports wall thicknesses from 0.25″ to 0.5″, with sensors under development to extend this range.
A key ally for the industry
The QSR system represents an innovative solution for pipeline inspection and monitoring in sectors such as petrochemical, energy, and industrial. Its ability to deliver real-time precise measurements, combined with artificial intelligence integration and ease of use, makes it a strategic choice for companies looking to optimize maintenance and ensure the safety of their facilities.
