From Houston, Texas during the ASNT 2023 annual conferenceRichard Blaser from Inspenet had the pleasure of interviewing Dan Guerrero, president of Willick Engineering, demonstrated some out-of-the-ordinary inspection applications.

Innovation in Inspection

What initially captured our attention was Dan’s computer screen, showing something we would never have expected at a show like ASNT. “Today, what we were looking at was a project with the New York Department of Historic Preservation” Dan explained.

Reviving History

Willick Engineering faced an interesting challenge: inspecting historical artifacts, from a gold-plated wooden eagle from the Revolutionary War era to human remains dating back centuries. “What we were looking for were signs of repairs and modifications made over the years,” Dan shared. On the eagle, for example, they were able to identify nails from different eras and other areas of potential weakness.

Modern Applications

Aside from this historical project, Willick Engineering engages in more traditional inspections. Dan showed an expansion joint on the screen,“Customers look at these components to make sure everything is assembled correctly and in place.”

Looking for Continuous Improvement

When asked about their expectations for the rest of ASNT, Dan mentioned that they were looking for“new technology, higher resolution, faster imaging capabilities, and more durable electronics.” As representatives of Doer NDT in the U.S., it is essential for them to stay ahead of the curve.
