At the NISTM 2025 event, Allie Alderson, Director of Strategic Growth and Sustainability for HMT LLC, shared an in-depth look at the technology solutions that are transforming the operational efficiency of industrial storage tanks. With more than five decades of experience, HMT is positioned as a global leader in the design and improvement of aluminum floating ceilings, sealing systems and emission control devices.
During the interview, Alderson stressed the importance of offering solutions tailored to the specific needs of each customer, emphasizing the quality of materials and process efficiency, HMT analyzes the frequency of use of each tank, product flows and other operational factors to offer the most suitable product. Among the options mentioned are the Illuminator 1000 model, a high performance aluminum floating roof, and the full contact HFC system, ideal for high-demanding operations.
Reference was also made to suspended systems that allow changing the configuration of the support legs without entering the tank, prioritizing the safety of the personnel in the field.
One of the main differentials of the company is its ability to offer a comprehensive service: from inspections to installation and repair of products, this structure allows to reduce downtime and optimize operational continuity. For many companies, every day out of service represents a significant economic loss, HMT responds to this need with an agile and effective proposal.
A concrete example mentioned by Alderson took place in South Africa, where a refinery was converted into a storage terminal. Instead of expanding the infrastructure with new tanks, HMT proposed the conversion of external floating roofs to internal floating roofs with lower profiles, such as skin and pontoon roofs. This modification allowed to increase the operational capacity without the need of major works.
In addition, the installation of bolted roofs and domes allowed the use of unskilled local labor, generating benefits for both the client and the community.

HMT's strategy is based on actively listening to its customers in different parts of the world. Based on their needs, the company has developed new products such as composite roofs, ideal for environments with highly corrosive products. These roofs combine lightweight materials with structural strength, facilitating access for inspections or minor maintenance.
Another recent development was the sealing system compatible with the new U.S. EPA requirements for liquid mounted seals. HMT responded to this regulation with a proprietary design that ensures regulatory compliance and long life.
Complying with international regulations is a priority for the company. As Alderson explained, the company has a team dedicated exclusively to monitoring regulatory changes, and thanks to its global presence, the company also receives direct feedback from operators in different regions, allowing it to anticipate changes and adapt quickly.
For HMT the relationship with its customers goes beyond the commercial transaction.
"We consider ourselves technical partners of our customers."
Alderson stated.
This philosophy translates into an ongoing commitment to safety, quality and the development of solutions that generate real value for operations.
Closeness to the client has also been important in identifying opportunities in new markets and operating environments. This collaborative approach allows each project to be a source of learning for the next.
