At the NISTM 2025 event, Eric Uutala, Technical Sales & Product Manager for Cortec Corporation, shared details about the company's technological approach and advancements in corrosion protection. Recognized globally for its solutions adaptable to multiple industries, Cortec has positioned itself as an effective alternative to traditional corrosion control methods, combining applied research and manufacturing autonomy.

During the conversation, Uutala emphasized that the company does not limit itself to offering products, but defines itself as a problem solver. This involves working directly with each customer's industrial processes without interfering in their operation, offering specific solutions according to the type of metal, environment and application.

Corrosion: an ongoing problem

In industries such as oil and gas, infrastructure, storage and metalworking, corrosion remains a constant threat. Metals such as carbon steel or cast iron are particularly vulnerable, especially in environments that are salty, wet or exposed to corrosive materials.

Faced with this challenge, Uutala stressed that Cortec Corporation offers a portfolio of more than 500 products manufactured in-house, from packaging films to paints, additives and cleaners. These products are designed to adapt to harsh environments and protect everything from electronic components to large-scale structures.

A technology that integrates and does not replace

Cortec's approach is not to replace existing technologies, but to work in conjunction with them. This is what Uutala explained when referring to the use of vapor phasecorrosion inhibitors (VCI) as a complement to cathodic protection systems. This compatibility has been fundamental for their implementation in storage tanks, where VCIs have proven their effectiveness for more than two decades.

Cortec's ability to integrate its solutions without disrupting facility operations has allowed its technologies to be used with confidence in critical sectors. In addition, its total manufacturing control model, from raw materials to final product, ensures traceability, quality and consistency in every batch delivered.

Scientific validation with regulatory support

One of the highlights addressed by Uutala was the work Cortec is doing in conjunction with PHMSA (Pipeline Hazardous Materials Safety Administration). The objective is to evaluate how VCIs behave when applied under tanks, specifically when moving through sand beds, and their interaction with cathodic protection systems.

Vision and commitment to quality

In addition to technological innovation, Uutala highlighted a key differentiator, each Cortec production facility has its own laboratory, allowing for continuous quality controls. Some of these laboratories are even independently certified under ISO standards, which reinforces the company's commitment to best practices.

Headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota and global presence, Cortec Corporation continues to expand its offering of anti-corrosion solutions, targeting markets that require high technical reliability and traceability.
