Is CORROSION possible in the TRANSPORTATION of LIGHT HYDROCARBONS?

This video is an interview conducted by the Inspenet team with Carlos Palacios, Corrosion and Mechanical Integrity Specialist, during API Summit 2024. At the beginning, Palacios shares his thoughts on the transition from oil and gas to renewables and expresses his enthusiasm for the API Summit as an opportunity to learn and network. He discusses the challenges of the transition, including public opposition to windmills in some areas and the overlap between oil and gas and renewable energy production. Palacios also reflects on his previous work assessing the integrity of non-pipeline pipelines and developing methodologies for assessing the integrity of wet and multiphase gas pipelines.

Corrosion in the transport of light hydrocarbons

Carlos Palacios talks about an unexpected problem in the transport of light hydrocarbons, such as butane or ethane. Contrary to popular belief, these hydrocarbons can dissolve small amounts of water, which causes corrosion. This phenomenon is not fully understood and requires specialized methods to measure water content. Despite the misconception that zero water means no corrosion, incidents have shown that water is always present, and designers are now incorporating water detection and assessment tools in pipelines to ensure safety. The industry is increasingly aware of this issue, but its implications may not be fully understood by everyone. He emphasized that this fact occurs outside of refineries.

He also talks about the misconception that water causes corrosion in waterless pipelines. He explains that despite this belief, corrosion still occurs, which begs the question of who is to blame.

Carlos Palacios indicates that studies are underway to deepen corrosion caused by light hydrocarbons in pipelines outside refineries.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its role in understanding corrosion.

Considering corrosion as a relatively new science, the corrosion expert expresses his enthusiasm for how AI can help in this area, as no one really understands the causes of corrosion.

Carlos Palacios and his book on corrosion

Carlos Palacios took the opportunity to talk about his book, ” Corrosion and Asset Integrity Management for Upstream Installations in the Oil/Gas Industry: The Journey of a Corrosion/Integrity Engineer – Real Life Experiences” which is available on Amazon. He expresses his satisfaction with the sales of the book and shares that it is available in both Spanish and English.
