Corrosion in the transport of light hydrocarbons

Carlos Palacios talks about an unexpected problem in the transport of light hydrocarbons, such as butane or ethane. Contrary to popular belief, these hydrocarbons can dissolve small amounts of water, which causes corrosion. This phenomenon is not fully understood and requires specialized methods to measure water content. Despite the misconception that zero water means no corrosion, incidents have shown that water is always present, and designers are now incorporating water detection and assessment tools in pipelines to ensure safety. The industry is increasingly aware of this issue, but its implications may not be fully understood by everyone. He emphasized that this fact occurs outside of refineries.

He also talks about the misconception that water causes corrosion in waterless pipelines. He explains that despite this belief, corrosion still occurs, which begs the question of who is to blame.
