AMPP and SLOM: a decade fighting corrosion in terminals

During the SLOM 2025 event held in Panama, José Sirera, AMPP's senior manager for Latin America, spoke about the advances and challenges in the fight against corrosion in marine terminals and monobuoys. The organization, recognized worldwide for its leadership in asset integrity and material protection, has maintained a strategic alliance with SLOM for the past decade as its technical reference in corrosion and structural integrity.

This agreement, signed in 2016 in Vancouver, has been instrumental in providing SLOM members with specialized advice, regulations and training against one of the most critical but often underestimated problems: corrosion.

AMPP and SLOM: ten years of technical partnership

The collaboration between AMPP and SLOM is neither symbolic nor institutional: it has a real impact on the daily operation of terminals and monobuoys throughout the region. AMPP, as the technical arm of SLOM, provides access to international standards, training and specific corrosion control solutions for critical infrastructure exposed to sea and extreme conditions.

As José Sirera explained, this alliance responds to a specific need. "Marine terminals and monobuoys have constant challenges due to corrosion. That is why SLOM decided to rely on the organization as experts to accompany its members with updated and reliable technical tools," said the executive.

The collaboration has raised the technical standard of maritime operations in the region, providing a long-term vision to prevent structural failures, accidents and environmental impacts.

Corrosion: a silent enemy that demands attention

One of the aspects most emphasized by Sirera was the tendency to postpone corrective actions in the face of corrosion, this is a problem that, because it is not immediate, is often underestimated. "Corrosion doesn't sleep, it advances slowly, and that gives people the perfect excuse to procrastinate," he explained.

From AMPP, the message is clear: prevention is more effective and less costly than correction. The organization promotes a culture of integrity based on continuous vigilance, planned maintenance and the use of certified technologies. It is not only about taking care of structures, but also about protecting people and preventing incidents that can have severe environmental and economic consequences.

In marine environments, where the effects of corrosion are accelerated by salinity and humidity, anticipation is essential. And for that, having up-to-date technical knowledge makes all the difference.

Latin America's environmental commitment

Contrary to certain prejudices, regional manager Sirera stressed that Latin American companies are showing a strong commitment to integrity and the environment. "I see in the region a real concern for the environmental issue. The companies that use our standards and training programs do so with a strong conviction," he said.

This approach is not minor, the corrosion protection is directly linked to the prevention of spills, structural failures and events that affect the natural environment. From the company's perspective, the value of its technical work is not only in preserving assets, but also in contributing to a safer and more responsible operation.

Road to AMPP 2026: training, technology and networking

Looking ahead, the company is already preparing for its annual conference in March 2026 in Houston, a highly prestigious technical event that brings together more than seven thousand professionals from around the world. Unlike other trade shows, AMPP 2026 is designed for those working directly in the industry: engineers, operators, inspectors and decision makers with a real interest in technologies and regulations related to corrosion and assets integrity.

"Everyone who attends does so because they are involved in these issues. They don't go out of curiosity, but because they need solutions," Sirera said. The fair will be an opportunity to learn about new techniques, materials, inspection methodologies and international best practices, in a space where technique is at the center of everything.
