Zelestra, a company with expertise in renewable energy and a strong global presence, has begun construction of two new solar plants in Castilla-La Mancha, Spain. This renewable energy project seeks to strengthen Spanish communities.
Construction of two new solar plants in Spain
These facilities, called Socovos II and José Cabrera, will be located in Albacete and Guadalajara, respectively, and will have a combined capacity of 83 MW. This project underscores Zelestra’s commitment to energy transition and sustainability, contributing to the reduction of CO₂ emissions and the promotion of clean energy in the country.
The José Cabrera plant, located in Guadalajara, will have a capacity of 50.4 MW, while the Socovos II plant, in Albacete, will have 33 MW of energy capacity. It is estimated that these photovoltaic installations can produce around 143 GWh of energy per year, equivalent to the annual consumption of 37,500 homes.
This production volume will allow us to avoid the emission of more than 71,500 tons of CO₂ each year, which represents a positive impact on the fight against climate change. In addition, it will improve the quality of life in the regions by significantly reducing polluting gases.
The use of renewable energy for Graphic Packaging International
Approximately 86% of the energy generated by these plants will go to Graphic Packaging International(GPI), a global company specializing in sustainable packaging solutions. This supply will be provided through a PPA(Power Purchase Agreement) signed between Zelestra and GPI, which guarantees the company secure and stable access to renewable energy for its operations.
In addition to the environmental benefits, the construction and operation of these solar plants will generate local employment at different stages of the project, from construction to operation and maintenance. This will contribute to the economic development of the regions of Albacete and Guadalajara, and will strengthen the energy infrastructure of the Autonomous Community of Castilla-La Mancha.
“We are very proud to contribute to Spain’s energy future and to be able to generate economic and environmental benefits for the country. The construction of these plants demonstrates our focus on execution in Spain, one of our growth markets.”
Leo Moreno, Zelestra’s representative.
With the start of these projects, Zelestra reaffirms its commitment to the energy transition in Spain, where it operates 384 MW of renewable energy. These new plants, scheduled to come online in 2025, are part of Zelestra’s global portfolio, which includes 20 GW of carbon-free projects in 13 countries.
The backing of EQT, one of the world’s largest fund managers with $246 billion in assets under management, enables Zelestra to further expand its ability to lead in the global renewable energy sector.
