Zelestra has announced a new phase in its collaboration with Graphic Packaging International by signing a third virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) that will allow the construction of a 19 MWdc solar plant in Villamañán, province of León.
The construction of the solar plant in León
The Villamañán solar plant, scheduled to begin operating in the first quarter of 2026, will generate approximately 28,700 megawatt-hours (MWh) per year. This generation translates into an estimated reduction of 4,900 tons of CO2 emissions per year. The project is part of a broader strategy that already includes the José Cabrera (Guadalajara) and Socovos II (Albacete) facilities, currently at an advanced stage of construction.
Through this third VPPA, Graphic Packaging reinforces its commitment to sustainability by diversifying the source of its clean energy guarantees, while increasing the resilience of its electricity supply. This move allows for the redistribution of some of the solar capacity originally committed between three different locations, which can facilitate future adjustments according to energy or regulatory needs.
Luis Alvargonzalez, country manager of Zelestra in Spain, highlighted that the three projects together will avoid more than 25,000 tons of CO2 emissions each year. He also underlined the commitment of both parties to meet the deadlines established to maximize the environmental and operational benefits of these investments.
For his part, Jean-François Roche, senior vice president of Graphic Packaging, noted that this contract extension not only reinforces its decarbonization strategy for Scope 1 and 2, but also improves the environmental footprint of its packaging solutions and contributes to its customers’ climate goals.
With a portfolio of more than 6 GW in Spain, Zelestra consolidates its position as a key player in the European energy transition. The company, backed by the EQT fund, has been recognized by BloombergNEF as one of the 10 largest clean energy providers worldwide and the second largest in the EMEA region.
