The companies Zelestra and EDP have signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) that will drive a new stage in clean electrification in Spain. The first agreement in the market that integrates a 170 MWdc solar plant with a 400 MWh battery storage system, located in Trujillo, Extremadura.
Zelestra and EDP’s hybrid solar power plant integration
The project will allow the energy generated to be stored daily for use at times when there is no solar irradiation, increasing the availability of renewable electricity at times of high demand and high prices. This hybrid configuration is designed to ensure full daily charging of the batteries, regardless of weather conditions.
The stored energy will be dispatched outside of solar hours, enabling EDP to replace part of its gas-fired generation with backup solar power. Annual production is expected to reach 300 GWh, which will help avoid more than 40,000 tons of CO2 emissions each year.
This energy model facilitates system decarbonization and improves grid flexibility. The combination of technologies at a single site optimizes operational efficiency and makes this development a reference case for future renewable deployments.
Zelestra, backed by EQT, manages a portfolio of nearly 30 GW of carbon-free projects in 13 countries. Meanwhile, EDP leads global renewable generation with more than 29 GW installed, and in Spain it operates more than 5,000 MW.
With this agreement, both companies consolidate their commitment to efficient, competitive and climate-responsible electrification. The signed PPA not only guarantees financial stability for the development of the project, but also sets a new standard for innovation in the purchase of manageable solar energy.
These types of solutions will expand the role of solar energy beyond daylight hours, facilitating the substitution of fossil sources at critical times in the system. The combination of grid-scale storage with solar generation marks a turning point in the country’s renewable integration strategy.
