The Italian company Eni and the state-owned oil company YPF formalized a cooperation agreement to advance in the ambitious Argentina LNG (ARGLNG) project, during a meeting in Rome between President Javier Milei and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
The commitment establishes the basis for final investment decisions, covering the infrastructure needed to produce, treat, transport and liquefy natural gas. natural gas through floating units. This initial stage contemplates a capacity of 12 million tons of LNG per year.
Argentina LNG: A megaproject with global impact
Argentina LNG seeks to transform the resources of the Vaca Muerta field into a global energy vector. The plan foresees exporting up to 30 million tons per year by 2030, consolidating Argentina as a relevant player in the international liquefied natural gas market.
The initiative is articulated in phases and contemplates both upstream and midstream development, with floating technology for liquefaction, which allows for a staggered and efficient implementation.
Eni has experience and proven execution
Eni was selected as a strategic partner because of its track record in similar projects, such as those in Mozambique and Congo. Its expertise in floating liquefaction technologies (FLNG) and its speed of execution were decisive factors.
This progress reinforces Eni’s strategy of contributing to a cleaner energy matrix, aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050 while ensuring competitiveness and security of supply.
The agreement comes in a context of diplomatic alignment between both countries. The presence of the presidents of Argentina and Italy is a sign of political support and international priority to the development of the Argentine gas sector.
Argentina LNG is thus emerging as a platform for integration between technical capacity, local resources and global demand, with the potential to redefine the country’s role on the world energy scene.
