A strategic alliance between XGS Energy and Meta will allow the development of a 150 megawatt geothermal energy project in New Mexico to boost the use of renewable, continuous energy without dependence on water.

The new generation geothermal power project

XGS Energy will apply its patented solid-state geothermal energy system , with the ability to generate electricity directly from hot rock formations without using water. This technology breaks through the limits that required subsurface permeability or the presence of water, reaching new geographic possibilities for base energy.

On the other hand, the company Meta operates energy-intensive data centers for its main services, will use some of this capacity to power its infrastructure in the state.

With state-of-the-art geothermal technologies such as XGS ready to scale, geothermal can be a key enabler in driving the advancement of technologies such as AI, as well as the development of national data centers.

We are excited to partner with XGS to drive a new category of energy supply for our New Mexico operations.

Urvi Parekh, Meta’s Global Energy Director.

New Mexico currently has only one active geothermal plant, despite being located on some of the country’s hot rock. The agreement between XGS and Meta could increase the state’s geothermal electricity production tenfold, supporting local climate goals and strengthening the PNM-operated power grid.

We are pleased to support Meta’s ambitious AI goals and accelerate access to new 24-hour power supplies.

Josh Prueher, CEO of XGS Energy.

This development will be divided into two stages: The first is an initial smaller scale phase and the second, will be subsequent larger capacity phases, both planned to be operational before 2030. This approach will facilitate progressive integration into the regional electricity system and will allow the technology to be adapted to different geological conditions in the area.

We are proud to support this innovative and carbon-free project by Meta and XGS Energy.

Don Tarry, president and chief executive officer of PNM.
