Woodside secures the continuity of its largest gas project in Australia

The project has generated enough gas to supply Perth for 175 years.

After an exhaustive evaluation and appeals process, the Australian government has granted final approval for Woodside Energy and its partners in the North West Shelf Joint Venture to continue operating one of the world’s most important developments dnatural gas country’s most important natural gas developments. This approval includes strict conditions aimed at protecting the cultural and natural heritage of the Murujuga area.

An energy legacy that continues to grow

The North West Shelf project has delivered more than 6,000 petajoules of domestic gas since its inception. This represents a crucial source of energy for Western Australia, with a significant impact on energy supply for more than four decades. Woodside estimates that this amount of gas would be enough to power a city like Perth for 175 years if used exclusively for residential use.

As part of the conditions imposed, monitoring of emissions in the Dampier Archipelago region will be intensified, with an emphasis on protecting the Burrup Peninsula, a site of national cultural value. Woodside has reiterated its commitment to the Murujuga World Heritage nomination process, working with local communities to preserve the landscape.

Economic and social impact on the Pilbara

Since its inception, the project has contributed more than A$40 billion in royalties and excise taxes, in addition to generating thousands of jobs in the region. In addition, social investment of more than A$300 million has been invested in infrastructure and community programs in the Pilbara, strengthening its role as an engine of regional development.
