Wood and Centrica Storage have teamed up on an exciting project to assess the possibility of establishing an innovative low-carbon hydrogen production facility in Easington, England. This strategic alliance marks a breakthrough in the transition towards a more sustainable energy matrix.
The project, supported by Centrica Storage in partnership with Equinor, aims to supply the Humber region with hydrogen. Located in East Yorkshire, the production site will be integrated with Centrica’s Rough field redevelopment and the Easington Terminal hydrogen fuel switch project, both subject to parallel studies by Wood.
The development of the low carbon hub in Easington over the next 10 years supports Centrica’s goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2045. Hydrogen plays a crucial role in this ambitious goal, as well as in the UK’s aspirations to achieve net zero emissions.
Wood, with his extensive experience in the hydrogen sector, will be responsible for evaluating different development scenarios, including green and blue hydrogen production facilities, along with their corresponding associated facilities and services.
Dan Carter, President of Decarbonization at Wood, expressed his excitement about this study which is closely aligned with Wood’s strategy of enabling its clients to decarbonise their operations and achieve net-zero emissions through sustainable design. The establishment of the Easington hub will provide a secure source of low carbon energy for the region, thus supporting the UK’s energy transition.
Martin Scargill, Managing Director of Centrica Storage, highlighted the excitement of continuing the collaboration with Wood as they explore opportunities to ease the UK’s transition to net zero emissions. Their goal is to establish more than 1 GW of low carbon green and blue hydrogen at Easington. The strong and strategic partnership with Wood, who has extensive experience in the hydrogen sector, is essential for the development and progress of this project.
